I have a wiry vine that is taking over our property. It grows wild at the 2500 ft elevation of the Sierra foothills and receives only natural rain water during the wet season. It resembles a honeysuckle but I haven’t noticed any flowers but it must have some because there are occasional small clusters of red ¼ in berries this time of year. It grows mostly in a mat close to the ground but sometimes climes up trees or bushes a few feet. The leaves are olive shaped, opposed and single on a short stem.

I have a photo but don’t know how to post it?

Looks like honeysuckle to me - my berries look just like that, and so does the vine.

The one up here that looks generally like this is Lonicera hispidula.

O.K. thanks, it looks like you folks have nailed it for me, some kind of California honey suckle. Further research also indicates the habitat is right as well. Drought tolerant, likes partial shade, and on the north side of the mountain.

My wife doesn’t like to venture into those areas, she tends to windup on her face in the poison oak with those vines wrapped around her ankles. I try to walk goose stepping and rip my way through them.
