    Greetings,

While walking along a trail on the hill in Layritz Park (behind Camosun College's Interurban Campus in Saanich/Victoria) I happened upon this large member of the Rose family growing along the trail edge. There were about 3 plants in an area of about 200 sqr feet and each consisted of several long, tall stems as pictured with very obvious thorns. The stems grew to a height of approx. 5 feet and the thorns were about 1/2" long and very stout! There were very few branches on any of the stems.

I hope my photos can help someone to aid me in ID'ing this beast - could this be a garden escapee - a rambler or something like that??

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If additional photos are desired I can go back too.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I am not sure whether the prickles on your images qualify as "strongly curved" but I suspect that your rose is either dog rose (Rosa canina) or some garden escape from the genus Rosa. I am sure, however, that your rose family plant is a true rose (Rosa sp.).
