Please help identify this plant i have had it for several years now and it seems to be growing well, i haven't seen it any where else.
Welcome Nikki. Looks like Hoya carnosa compacta. Common name Hindu rope plant. See.... http://images.google.com/images?hl=...1&q=Hoya+carnosa+compacta+&btnG=Search+Images
You'll want to give your compacta a few hrs of direct sun to help it flower:) Also, keeping the roots on the root-bound side I think helps too. Here's mine with flower buds & flowers which feel almost like plastic.
Good for you Bluewing. I have heard, although I don't know if it is true, that the compacta are particularly difficult to bring to flower...
Hi Chester, As long as they receive some direct sun, like 3 hrs or so, you should see flowers. It's an easy bloomer compared to other carnosa's, for me anyway. This one is in a south window pretty much touching the glass. Unfortunately, the flowers don't have any scent to them, even though some sellers on ebay say they do. Never tasted a flower or leaf yet, but I'll be sure to let you know;) I received the plant in the photo as two small (3") un-rooted cuttings maybe 4, or 5. yrs ago??? The longest stem, or vine, is around 3' long. The two stems are growing in a small hanging 3" clay pot and it really should go up another size, it's REALLY root-bound! I have another compacta plant that's about 4 ft away from the flowering one and it's never flowered, well, not yet anyway. It needs to be moved a little bit closer to the window all. I posted this photo before if it looks familiar...
A big thanks too everyone who responded to my request! i had my hoya for six years and it took me a while to realize that it stopped growing as much because i didn't have it in the sunlight, a part of it dried up and died, i have had it in the window you see in the picture for three years now, which gets plenty of sun light, and still no flowering, does it have to be a certain length to flower?
The nectar from the flowers is edible, and very sweet. Lick the droplets off, but don't chew the flowers. The leaves are poisonous - don't even try to eat one!
I wouldn't eat any of my plants, no flower, no leavers, not even the nectar, I like reg people food and diet coke:) Nikki, I believe I saw the first flowers when the stems were about 7"-8" long, but I could be mistaken, they could have been a little shorter as well. Are you fertilizing at all? I use a small amount of liquid Miracle-Gro 10-15-10 with each watering. You want the middle number to be higher which will help flowering plants to flower.
Wow just beautifull Blue ... i have a tri colored one and i cant wait for it to bloom . mine just got moved a south window 2 months ago (just bought a house were i can hang it in a window like that ) and it has been growing good .. just cant wait for some flowers ... i sooo hope it does .. Marion
Thanks Marion:) I also have a variegated compacta, no flowers yet though. It's growing in 4" pot, so it's not that big yet. It will go outside in the summer, maybe being outdoors it will double in size... Hope you see some flowers soon!
