Vancouver spraying to fight off Japanese beetle invasion

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is restricting movement of plant material and soil out of a large swath of Vancouver in an effort to contain an invasive Japanese beetle that has fed its way across the continent for decades and is now infesting the downtown area of the city.

Staff have started to spray parks and public areas inside the contained area with larvicide in a bid to kill the destructive beetles before they emerge from the ground and take flight...Private landowners and property managers located in a treatment area (distinct from the broader containment zone) can have their lawns treated at the province’s dime, according to the agriculture ministry.
