In the midst of chaos, it is reassuring to have one small patch of ground that can be made orderly and alive. Cultivating one's garden implies belief in future life, and gives one hope. If familiar landmarks are swept away, to have an activity that is normal and friendly and constructive can do a lot to provide a glimmer of cheer in the darkness of depression and fear. As Ron said: it is food for the soul.
