Having already lost Murray's Nursery, the only stores in Vancouver are Art Knapp's on Granville and the terribly-expensive Southlands. But there are many chinese-run nurseries in Richmond, plus of course Mandeville where my wife and I usually take chili, and Phoenix Perennials...
It's really unfortunate. The people there made it a nice place to shop and now most will lose their jobs. The timing, being Christmas and New Year's, makes it even more difficult. I hope it'll be a temporary setback for both the nursery and the staff.
Partnering with either private schools or even better, public schools on the West Side , could remedy this situation. Imagine, a botanical expanse, that would green up a perimeter of a concrete playground, and yet add income for the school facility? St. Augustines, Churchill? So many to consider... all have either excellent or reasonably good accessibility...... plant for thought I say!
As a matter of unoffical government policy, public-private partnerships in this province are only considered when there is (a) significant risk, which is to be imposed 100% on the public, and (b) a reasonable chance of significant profit, which is to be transferred 100% to the private. I work with them as part of my job, having sold out long ago. This would not have either aspect.
With all that vacant land along the railway tracks up and down Arbutus, one would think some sort of arrangement could be made for a temporary location.
