British Columbia: Vancouver Figs (ID?) and their Futures

    I think these are figs, but I really have 2 questions:
    —their ID, so I can know them with some certainty from now on
    —whether their brown leaves are merely a bit of die-back, or whether the shrubs are in trouble, as from the recent freezing snow; in other words, how much do these brown leaves matter to the plants?

    These photos were taken this week in Vancouver's West End near Stanley Park, toward the end of Nelson Street. They are different plants.

    I think they are both evergreen magnolias. The first looks like M. grandiflora. The brown indumentum on the bottoms of the leaves is normal for magnolia.
