I am growing 'Thunderbird' from 1 gallon liners for sale as B&B material. Soil is somewhat heavy but being amended annually; plants get 6-8-6 annually; parts of the planting are water-logged over winter.
With no particular pattern I am finding fleshy stems with a proliferation of tender, fleshy growth on them. These growths bring to mind a 'witches broom' of over stimulation. Growths, most often, begin at or near ground level but some start in the upper plant.
Is this growth derived from cultural practices or a genetic aberration?
I cut out the fleshy stems and the rest of the plant seems to carry on perfectly well.

I've read it's a native edible smut with psychoactive properties. Maybe it makes users see thunderbirds.
