I have a few Japanese maple cultivars ( Trompenburg, Iijima Sunago and Seiryu) that have V-shaped branches near the ground that are also co-leaders. I know that if the V-shaped crotches are high they tend to split later and one branch should be removed from the tree to avoid this problem. Do the V-shaped branches near the ground also pose the same risk as the V-shaped branches that are high up? Any suggestions?
