About two years ago I planted two Arbor Vitae trees near the corner of my house for protection to the garden. The trees were supplied by a local nursery. A few month later I noticed what I thought was a gooseberry bush, as my neighbor has one, and this one was probably imported by birds. A couple of weeks ago I noticed the form of the bush does not look like gooseberry, the shoots are elongated, climbing to the roof of the house. Can anyone help with Identification? Should I keep it or destroy it.? Thanks
Thanks, the article you sent describes the plant almost perfectly. I now think I shall transplant it, if possible, just for fun and curiosity. I did notice red berries on it last year. I have an apple tree nearby which is having a terrible battle with Coddling Moths. I have studied the problem and noticed on one site that the moths are attracted to Hawthorne bushes. I had thought that this "unwanted guest" was a Hawthorne, and now am thinking of removing it to a place as far as I can. Thanks, I enjoy your many posts. KK
Thanks. It is nice of you to say this :-) As for the plant in question, to make completely sure that indeed it is Ribes odoratum, if you decide to keep it watch for lovely fall colours soon, and early in spring for fragrant, trumpet-shaped, small, yellow flowers, followed by edible, black at maturity berries.
