I planted this Acer palmatum 'Umegae', which was purchased from a very dependable supplier, early last spring. When planting, I remember the leaves being purple. Now the leaves are more of a yellowish-green color. The tree receives full sun in zone 7 central Arkansas. I cant find much information about this cultivar in regards to color change and sun/shade requirements. Anyone with information or an opinion of what's going on? Thanks!
Mine is the expected purple red, and holds it's color well considering that it's in a fairly shady area.
My "Umegae" is planted in a rather shady location in east-central Alabama and it comes out an unusual purple with green veins but quickly "greens out" by the first of July. Your culitvar looks just like mine does at this point. Mine started a second flush of growth this month again purple in color. Another trait of mine is a strong yellow strem and branch structure. A beautiful and uncommon maple although old. In short, I think we have the same tree.
