I was checking on my trees today, and came across something rather odd on my Shinju, at least in my experience. As you can see from the pictures, the branches are typically a really nice green. However, I noticed some newly dead branches - or ones that are on their way out - that are various shades of red. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

I've seen that happen before, usually with interior or lower and shaded twigs. I think the bark on the twigs is going through the same type of chemical changes as leaves do when they turn red in fall, so that the sugars from that twig can be redistributed to other parts of the tree.

Cool! I wasn't worried, but I'd never seen something like that before, so I was curious as to if there was a reason it would happen. And now I know. :)
