In the unmaintained area between our yard and a freeway, I came across a bush about 5-6 feet tall with serated leaves and clumps of small red berries. I've attached a photo of a branch with leaves and a berry cluster.

I'm in Edmonton. The photo was taken today, August 1, 2013. Other berries around here, such as saskatoons, are ripening about 2 weeks later than normal this year.

Looks like Red Elder (Sambucus racemosa). Toxic, berries only edible after seeds removed and the pulp cooked.
