New to Sooke, BC area. At the back of property this tangled up plant just started to leaf out and bloom. The other photo is of a flowering shrub in a bed with some Rhododendrons. Please identify. Thanks

#1 looks like a Pieris japonica (don't know which cultivar), #2 looks like salmonberry.

Partly correct: it's Pieris 'Forest Flame' (P. formosa 'Wakehurst' x P. japonica). You can see the influence of P. formosa 'Wakehurst' in the color of the new growth, the comparative robustness of the new growth and in the shape (and thickness) of the leaves.

Rubus spectabilis (as indicated already). It probably seeded into the planting and was never dug out.

Thank you both so much. These plants are actually in the yard of my son and family who just moved to the Sooke area. Living in Alberta there are several plants I have no knowledge of. No doubt as other plants start to come up and bloom I will have other questions.
