Microphotograph of unknown insect on cactus. Over the summer I noticed these little critters on some of my cacti. They did not seem to cause any problem, I sprayed with pyrethin based spary (I think they are tollerant). Today I found one on a cactus that I have brought indoors. They might spread to my whole collection. What is it? Can it be controlled without killing my plants? Where does it live (roots, soil, stem...)? Thanks, Waz
I should add that these insects are almost invisible. they are about 1 mm long and a hair wide. The image was taken through a microscope. I hope this improves the response rate!
It reminds me of a thrips larvae or pupae. Looks like I see wings developing. Here's a picture of an adult. http://www.homestead.com/ipmofalaska/files/thrip.jpg http://www.ipm.msu.edu/CAT02_veg/V07-03-02thrips.htm http://www.homestead.com/ipmofalaska/files/thrips.html This site lists common pests of cactus. http://www.cactus-mall.com/pests.html Newt
Ok, Newt! I think you are correct. It DOES look like a thrip. From what I can gather, they feed on young leaves. I suppose they are in deep at the apex of my cacti sucking on the fresh growth. They do not seen to be causing much harm. I'll take my time with trying to control them. From what I have read it would seem to be an ongoing task. Many thanks, and I like your quote! Waz
Waz, you are so very welcome! I do hope you can get rid of them. Maybe this will help. http://www.yardener.com/SolutionsForThrips.html Newt
