Unknown Flowering Tree - Mid-Eastern China

    Can anyone identify this tree for me? I am just outside Shanghai in a small town. The local gardeners say it is the only one in the area and don't know its name.

    Looks like a huge Photinia serrulata.

    Thanks Lila. Much appreciated! I will tell the gardeners the good news tomorrow. Ha, I didn't know that it is normally a shrub. Interesting what turns up once one starts to ask questions! :)

    If that species it should have saw-toothed leaf margins. Not an exceptionally large example by any means, at least one 50' tall is known just in Seattle - where more than one over 40' has been noted as well.

    No, the leaves on this tree are smooth-edged.

    One odd thing, in the write-ups I came across, the flower of this tree is supposed to have an unfriendly odor whereas the flowers on this tree are especially fragrant.
