Hello and thank you for a great forum.
When I visited Kyoto a couple of months ago I saw a lot of these ferns growing on the trees. Can anyone help me to identify it?

Do you have a close-up photo of it?

Yes, I brought one as a souvenir (excuse me) that I planted in a pot on my balcony.
I also sew spores from it in a glass jar and now I have at least 500 sporelings of this fern.
Hopefully someone will be able to identify it from these pictures that I took with my mobile phone? //Johan

That is really neat looking. I'll be anxious to hear what it is myself.
    Good luck..

Hmmm... Polypodium percussum? There are a number of simple-fronded Polypodium species in Japan, so it may be another (there are also a few simple-fronded ferns in other genera). Unfortunately, my reference is all in Japanese with the exception of the scientific name, so I can't find out which ones are epiphytic.

    Thank you for replying Daniel.
Yes, it seems very likely that the fern is from the Polypodiaceae family. After looking at some images I think it looks like a Polypodium lineare (Lepisorus thunbergianus) …what do you think? I have not found any information regarding its hardiness. Apparently it is also indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands, which usually means “not hardy” where I live. For now it will stay in my “Vivarium in honor of Carl Peter Thunberg” :) // Johan
