Identification: Unknown berry

    Found this while out quading the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island and have never seen one before. At first I thought it was a rose hip because of it's size. After exhausting my books and quite a few websites I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me.
    It has a leathery skin and the insides are juicy, sweet and seedy.

    Shape and surface of fruit is like that of gummy gooseberry.

    That seems to be a pretty close match. I'm not sure about the being unpalatable though as these were quite tasty.
