Have been unable to match the attached to any plant on the list for this particular bed at RBG Melbourne; they aren't sure what it is either. Maybe Olmediella betschleriana? Haven't seen the flowers. It's a medium to tall tree. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
http://www.plantconservatory.calpoly.edu/Tree/Olmediella_betschleriana.html has good information about Olmediella betschleriana and its use history. It is possible it is this plant, but the leaf margin is different between the two samples. The one in Cal Poly is smooth, yours is toothed and as such is closer to the images at http://herbario.zamorano.edu/Maderables/paginas_maderables/Olmediella_betschleriana.htm and http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Olmediella_betschlerana. Considering that the plant is native to Central America, I would find the images from those regions of the world to be more trustworthy as true to type. Can tell you that most plants have alternate leaves. The search can be quickly narrowed by searching for a small trees with opposite leaves.
