I would like assistance in identifying a maple shoot I received recently. I have searched this website and the internet to no avail. The leaves are the same color of green on the back. I was able to search the maple tree gallery and could not find an exact match. Any help give is greatly appreciated!

    Field Maple (Acer campestre)

PS if that is a cutting, it won't take root. It can only be propagated by seed or grafting.

Rocky Mountain sugar maple is similar to field maple, you might want to compare with that one also.

To tell them apart, snip off a leaf and look at the sap that comes out of the leaf stem:

    Field Maple: Milky white sap.

    RM Sugar Maple: Clear sap.

Test best done earlier in the summer, though, there might not be much sap left in the leaf stems now.

Thank you! I did run out and check the lower leaves. The sap is milky so field maple appears to be the likely choice. Thanks! The trees were offshoots from a larger tree in my mom's yard. Thanks also for the additional info on propagation. I have a lot to learn.

Thank you. I am pretty sure it is the field maple after checking the sap. I did not realize that there were so many different varieties of maples. This will be the second and probably not my last.
