Would someone help me identify this unusual, funny looking growth on my Sylvester palm? Can I have it sawed off without damaging the tree. Although it looks like a good joke I want it gone. Thank you
Good afternoon and welcome to the forum. This is a tree Burl that will not harm your tree. But IMO if you remove it this will leave your tree open to infection. But you can have them removed.
Ah, I thought it might be this: Normal Abnormalities in Palm Trees | Hernando Sun I don't think palms produce burls, since they don't actually produce wood. I suggested contacting their local county extension to confirm.
After seeing Daniels posting I fully agree with his theory, so please ignore my thoughts on it being a Burl.
What an interesting page. I have added it to Outdoor Tropicals Resources | UBC Botanical Garden Forums.
As per Daniels link page, they say not to cut it off. As we know now it is not a Burl, but I would not cut that off either, as I stated in my reply on my first posting to you.
