For the past 5 years I've had this unknown succulent growing in my garden. It has flowered and unfortunately I don't have a picture of in bloom (usually a good identifier of such things). The dull pink blooms are held well above the foliage in clusters very similar to Echeveria. I've lost any info I had on this, and even the original supplier of this plant can't ID it. Here it is with a characteristic reddish coloring during winter. Thanks in advance...LPN. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/LasPalmasNorte/Nov.jpg
Hi, I think that is Echeveria elegans or Hen with Chicks was the common name that I've alway heard it called. See this link for a picture to compare yours with, complete with the red tinged leaves. Harry
Well here's another pic I took this afternoon of the same plant. It looks very similar to the one wrygrass posted, except mine is much less compact. All the leaves are growing in an open, widely spaced pattern. Perhaps a condition of environment?
Hi LPN, Possibly due to environment, moisture, etc. I first thought of the sedum, too, but as you compared the blooms to Echeveria I expect it is E. elegans or possibly another Echeveria species. The Sedum blooms I found on line for ghost plant didn't seem to fit the bill. But since you have seen the blooms, you might take a look at the Sedum and Sempervivum on this page to see if your plant compares. Then do a google picture(image) search for the genus that it most appears to be. Nothing like narrowing it down. :) Hope this helps in any case. Harry
I may have the same plant that you do, LPN. Here it is when I first got it about a year ago - looks almost identical to yours. Mine was labeled "sempervivum" but I've never thought that was accurate. I also don't think mine is an echeveria elegans. My plant has unfortunately never produced clumping babies like yours (I'll probably do a cutting of it in the spring). This is a recent photo of it. It has lost the "glow" in its coloration since late fall and started growing strethed out (probably from the lower light that mine gets). I don't know if it is a kind of echeveria (hens & chicks) or graptopetalum (ghost plant) or some other hybrid, but I'd love to get a name for it as well. I'm leaning toward some sort of hybrid.
Hi Ginger Blue! Thanks! I migrated to another garden forum & someone there directed me to here about a Bryophyllum they'd seen. I got sidetracked! :)
Good to see a couple of familiar and well respected names pop up here (Rosemarie & Ginger Blue). This board is well formatted and moderated, with a range of subject matter to please almost everyone. Cheers, LPN (Las Palmas Norte)
Barrie, is that you? Nice to see you here! Thank you for your kind remark! Funny, when people change their names on different boards...you need to play detective to figure them out. I'm trying to see who Weekend Gardener is...because I recognize the "Stumper" plant posted (a type of grass) that I recall seeing on GW Grdn Photo Gallery long ago! Ha ha! I have a Pachyveria 'Powder Puff', which is similar to yours, but mine is more blue & has thinner leaves.
There needs to be an "alias key" somewhere, LOL! As that Other Place lost favor, it's been interesting to see where everyone went. I'm realizing that change is good. Thanks for the compliment, LPN! You made my day!
