I live in Cairo, Egypt, and am enjoying life in a zone where frost never harms my plants. I have recently purchased an interesting shrub (would likely be an indoor plant in Canada or USA) which produces unusual purple flowers. When I ask Egyptian gardeners what the name of the plant is, they usually tell me that it's a "Purple Jasmine Plant." This is actually somewhat humorous, as this is the standard name given to any unidentifiable plant. ("What's that? Red blooms? Why, that's a "Red Jasmine Plant!")

Can anyone offer their expertise in identifying this? If you happen to know common names, that would also be quite handy. Thanks!
