Hello, A gift I received from a landscaping friend is in dire straits right now. We've done everything we can to save it, but I don't know exactly what kind of a plant it is. I'm hoping if it can be identified, it might help save it. I really appreciate your help in advance.
Could be a corn plant (Dracaena fragrans). Must have quite a hefty specimen in is heyday, judging by the diameter of the original trunk. When was this plant last repotted? How much light does it get? If this were my plant, I might just try starting from the beginning by taking a cutting of the sprout.
I actually think you're right. It's some off shoot of a corn plant... I thought corn silk at first, but I'm not sure. I'm thinking the soil is bad, I'm going to try to repot it. I think we were watering it a bit too much too. We broke off one of the dead stalks and it was completely full of water.
Bad soil---old and compacted---plus excess water = CONCRETE. Not good! I applaud your decision to repot.
Probably Yucca elephantipes (currently Yucca guatemalensis). Link shows effects of not enough light. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/14225/ http://bp0.blogger.com/_Wi_TrcTZdWU/R5pojPbYJCI/AAAAAAAAAiY/K-xGYuFJnvc/s1600-h/yucca33.jpg HTH Chris
Well we just moved it to a high light area, repotted it and everything. I'm hoping that it makes a comeback. If not, at least I know we did everything we could. =/
