i have sum sort of fungi growing in my bathroom i had a water leak or do still have it im not too sure but i noticed today that there is a rather large funig growing from my ceiling and im scared that it could harm my child with spores or something please please help me
Hi BBE, It looks like Peziza domiciliana. Here's a link to one of Mr. Kuo' pages: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/peziza_domiciliana.html I expect it likes drywall, so presumably likes a higher ph level. So perhaps the application of something more acidic like vinegar might help discourage it. However, generally with fungi, when fruiting bodies appear, the larger body of the fungus is hidden in the substrate, so it is possible that your bathroom ceiling/wall is infused with the fungus. Here's a page I found discussing indoor fungi, including Peziza: http://www.forensic-applications.com/moulds/habits.html And another describing Peziza's apparent harmlessness: http://pasteurlaboratory.com/common3.htm cheers, -frog
Peziza cerea. Please, see these threads: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=36949&highlight=peziza+varia Cheers, Harri Harmaja http://www.fmnh.helsinki.fi/users/harmaja/index.htm
Hi Harri, Good to see you again! You don't think this is too large to be P. cerea? Or at least my impression from the photo is that this is something like 4-5 inches across. Or perhaps a better question is - what in the appearance or habitat indicates to you the likelihood of one Peziza over another? cheers & thanks, frog
