Identification: underground, fungus, plant?

    underground, at base of fir stump, deer had been digging at it. texada island.
    any ideas?

    Or possibly a sclerotium given the shape/size.

    Fossickingirl do you have a more focussed shot of the interior?
    Also: Did it seem connected to the stump or to the soil? Did you notice if there were any flat fungal bodies on the surface of the stump perchance?

    Thanks for the information, I will take some more photos later today. the fungus was attached underground, approx. .5 meter, about the same distance away from the stump. attached to dead wood underneath, could not determine if the dead wood was actually the root of the fir or not. Nothing growing on the stump that we noticed. I looked at some photos of sclerotium, and the one individual branch and node looks similar, the rest of the growth does not.

    earthy and somewhat like pine mushroom.

    a couple of more photos....very curious. plenty of years experience, neither of us have ever come across such before. any ideas on who/where we might take this to identify with certainty?
