    Hello,
A tree has sprung up in the backyard of my Toronto home that i need help in identifying. White mulberry has come back as a strong possibility on other forums.

If it is a ficus, I'd like to know what cultivar it is.....I tried to find something that resembles the leaf shape and came up blank......

Note location is Toronto. Photos of the same leaf type being produced by white mulberry are on the web.

Ficus carica 'Ice Crystal' has similarily cut leaves, but the bark on the trunk doesn't look like a match for ficus. There is a huge variation in mulberry leaf shapes, though.

Note specimen is a spontaneous sprout in Toronto. Many other similar examples elsewhere in eastern North America have been identified on the internet as white mulberry.

Yah, pretty compelling case for white mulberry. Suppose the hollow stem in the photo is simply a case of the pith having rotted out.

This is a very young tree, only months old. I'll observe for now and post any changes in the coming months. Unfortunately, given it's location, we will have to cut it down if it gets too big.

Although mulberry has come back repeatedly, i'm still not entirely sure...

All you have to do is look a little longer at Google pictures and the same leaf type will appear. GardenWeb has had multiple queries about the same kind of foliage and occurrences, with accompanying photos submitted - if you search there it should be possible to find some of these threads.
