Please don't cut your schefflera! If you've had it for 8 years and it's grown that well, you must be doing something right. Yes, that's the drawback...it gets BIG! If you just don't have the room for it anymore, consider giving it to a hospital, school, etc. that has a nice big well-lit area where it can be happy and well-tended, and grow as big as it wants to. As for repotting, get a pot at least a few inches bigger in diameter than the one your plant's in; provide good drainage; use a nice rich potting soil; and maybe enlist the help of a friend to spot you (this will be an athletic event!). Make sure that you have enough room to maneuver, too, so that branches remain unbroken---and your back and arms, as well.

If you can do so, post a photo of your plant. Am sure that you will get other valuable advice: the folks here know everything---no question too big, small, or obscure! Welcome to the Forum.

    Hi mskda,

You can use reg potting soil, adding perlite, cactus soil can help with better drainage. Only go up ONE pot larger if the roots are overly crowded.
Branches can be cut back "just above" where other stems & leaves are groing off the plant, new growth with sprout near the cut areas. The cuttings can be tossed out, or rooted to make new plants.
