Found these in my woods fairly close to my field, I live in NJ in zone 6b. Any help in identification would be greatly appreciated.
It's Dendrolycopodium (known as Lycopodium by some botanists- not a lot of consistency with plant names). I can't tell from your photos which species. https://gobotany.newenglandwild.org/genus/dendrolycopodium/
may be Dendrolycopodium obscurum. On obscurum, the leaves on the undersides of the branches are much smaller/shorter than the leaves on the other sides (as shown on photo at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lycopodium_obscurum)
Not something I would ever eat. This website says it is toxic except for the spores http://www.pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Lycopodium+obscurum and this MSDS sheet for Lycopod spores describes them as slightly hazardous https://www.spectrumchemical.com/MSDS/L3610.pdf
