Douglas Justice wrote about Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm' (gold storm black-eyed Susan) in July 2020 in the Neighbourhood - UBC Botanical Garden, featured July 20. I would have thought this might be it, but these stems are not at all hairy. If not that cultivar, is the species right? These are in Stanley Park, at the Rose Garden.

Then there is this group of what I would also have called Black Eyed Susans, but the leaves are very different, narrow with one prominent midrib, some are simple leaves but some are compound, in 3's; some are opposite on the stem, some are whorled. Also not hairy. The same Parks Board looks after this area, Alexandra Park, two blocks from where I live.

The word Coreopsis came to me this evening while I was looking at these again, and here it is - Coreopsis tripteris, tickseed. I posted a different Coreopsis at UBCBG last year that looks nothing like this. It's not a plant I have ever recognized.

Here are a couple more photos. Leaves are maybe around 8mm long, 15mm wide.

The Rudbeckia fulgida still does not look hairy, but the stems are rough-feeling.
