These were found in MO USA First one I think could be prairie dock http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/natureblogg/018.jpg Second one I think could be some kind of rose or maybe a small hawthorn of some kind because it had good size thorns on it. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/natureblogg/024.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/natureblogg/025.jpg The leaves felt pretty smooth, esp. on top and were alternate.
I looks like it could be a Rumex. You might can find it by doing searches for those in your area... LINK There are a lot of hawthorns, and are not always easy to identify. Also, your state flower. LINK
