Three-lobed leaves, bigger leaf about 12 x 14 cm: Six- and seven-lobed leaves: Size comparison: The leaves are dry.
Is this a question? Two questions? If yes, do we get habit photos? Or are we just admiring the nice intense colours that look like dye samples? Anyway, and not being any sort of expert, I would say red maple (Acer rubrum) and Japanese maple (Acer palmatum). Did you want a cultivar name?
Photos of the bark and seeds may also help for the 3 lobed one. Agree with Wendy on the A. palmatum , an atropurpureum form. There are many cultivars shown in the photo gallery. If grafted it's likely a cultivar. The leaves are somewhat similar to A.p. 'Osakazuki' , which has 7-lobed sometimes cupped leaves with intense red fall colour, but there are many others.
Right, I forgot about those, particularly if the three-lobed-2 photo is showing tufts of hairs along the midrib. Or maybe I'm imagining that and the hairs don't persist when the leaves have dried. The bark and whole tree photos would help.
Thanks everybody. Yes, it is a question, just one: what are the species/cultivars? Thought it was self-evident, sorry. I will try to take more pictures when I am in Nelson next time. Comparing with pictures on the Net, the venation and texture of the leaves look somewhat different from "mine". Also, I can't see any "tufts of hairs along the midrib", I will check again on the fresh leaf later. As for Acer rubrum, the smooth "tulip" shape of "my" big leaf looks different from what I can see for Acer rubrum in the image search. Am thinking, could it be Acer pensylvanicum? I agree with Acer palmatum, thanks.
I've been able to identify those by the white-lined branches and the white lines on the trunk as well, at least on young ones I've seen.
