I just bought a very attractive looking Tsuma Beni, but am puzzled as to why the container is labelled Tsuma Beni followed by (Tsuma gaki) in parenthesis. From reading here on the forums it seems they are two distinct cultivars. I will accept that there are two so I wonder which one I actually have acquired..... Is there any way to tell the difference?

I have them both and I can not see much difference. In mature size there is a difference in growth pattern with Tsuma Beni a little taller. I believe there is some differences in the spring color and how the leaver emerge in spring.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will quit obsessing over which one it is as I think it will make a handsome shrub regardless :).

I have both, and what I see is that Tsuma gaki has longer lobes/leaf tips than Tsuma beni. Tsuma gaki also seems to be more prone to wind burn.
