Identification: Trying to Identify a Plant...Think its a Palm

Discussion in 'Indoor and Greenhouse Plants' started by Unregistered, Feb 15, 2006.

  1. I have a plant in my greenhouse that I, nor anyone else can id. It's about 2.5' High and slightly smaller in width. There is no trunk the stems grow right from the soil. The leaves are lanceolate, 24" long, have parallel venation, and an entire leaf margin. The base and apice are acute. The leaves are puckered, and have a somewhat stiff feel to them. No flowers that I have seen. The plant is a light green color, think: tennis ball. The tips of the leaves will burn in the sun, I know that as I have experimented with placement. It does well on the north side of the greenhouse. After I put the plant in the sun, and the plant became stressed I cut it hard and it grew right back. Resembles an Aspidistra elatior. I appreciate any input. Thanks.

Perhaps Asplenium nidus, or bird's nest fern? Also take a look for A. australasicum which is sold for A. nidus and note the fronds in these roll out like party blowout as they grow.
