I live in the woods of West Virginia and there are many types of berries that grow here, some wild strawberries even. This plant I have looked all over the internet for, but nothing seems to match the same description. I have only been able to find *similar* plants, and when it comes to berries, similar is not good enough.

the plant is vine like, but does not actively climb. it has small thorns and dewy hairs covering its stems and has white flowers in the spring. grows tall, but fruiting vines stay lower to the ground, stems are reddish in color. fruit ripens in july and looks like a raspberry, they are bright red when ripe. leaves grow in clusters of 3 and can get rather large on the more developed part of the vine, they are soft and fuzzy on top, and a little prickly underneath. here are some pictures of what they look like right now. soil is usually moist and is acidic.

Definitely a Rubus, but the difficulty will be in determining which one. Eastern North America is one of the main centres of diversity for the genus (see maps of state occurrences from the USDA PLANTS database)

That is what I suspected but EVERY account said they were not at all thorny, and that threw me way off. thanks for the quick reply!

lol this is actually the one I was just looking at on the USDA site, the pictures from your link are much more detailed and I am quite sure this is the plant I have in my yard!
