I have a maple tree with a large trunk splitting. I found galvanized bolts for clamping the trunk instead of stainless steel ones. Could they harm the tree?

    Hello,

Galvanized steel will poison a tree. I only know this because I do bonsai (I use aluminum wire to train branches on maples, because galvanized wire can kill the tree).

Check out this video on bolting a split trunk back together. Stainless steel would be the best choice for a bolt and nut because of its resistance to corrosion. Galvanized is just steel coated with a thin layer of zinc to resist corrosion, but will eventually rust once the layer of zinc is exhausted. Spring for the stainless, order it online if necessary.
