I have a trumpet vine that we know is more than 4 years old because we bought the house that it came with 4 years ago. This year we have noted that it does not show any sign of life. In the past we would have seen some greenery appearing in late May but this year nothing. The only new growth is at the base of the plant and nowhere else on the plant. Did the colder winter in SW Ontario kill off the older part of the plant or is it just taking a very long nap.
Hi Perry, I note that Campsis radicans is hardy to USDA zone 6, so a really cold snap could kill it. Sounds like yours was just knocked back. With a little time it should grow into a large vine again. How is it doing now?
The original plant has still not shown any new green growth so I guess that final curtain has dropped. There is growth from the bottom that is working it's way up thru the dead vines so I guess that it will look like the old vines have started to regrow. I have planned to remove a lot of the smaller vines and just keep the larger vines for the young ones to crawl up. Sounds like kids and parents. Life is a constant state of change so this is just another way for things to change. Thanks for the information. Perry
Hi Perry, Hope you have lots and lots of room for your Campsis radicans and it's not planted in a flower bed. In a few years you will see it popping up everywhere. Newt
Latest update on the magic trumpet vine. It has started to wind up it's old stalk and create a green canopy again. Just to let you know that it is not in a flower bed but we do keep it under control with the lawn mower. Even when the grass is brown from this high heat condition, the creepers are green and give the kids a reason to cut the lawn. Perry
