IMG_20210720_113126.jpg I am carving a piece of wood I found in the woods near my house. Can anyone speak to the forces that created this helical masterpiece?

Bindweed or Honeysuckle or some other climbing plant, growing up the stem a year or two ago and constricting the growth of the trunk.

Probably caused by a Celastrus or maybe an Actinidia.

I guess you could find out what type/species of climber it was with some time spent investigating in the woods.

Mods, please move this thread out of the Maple Species Gallery.
