I have a 30 year old cedar hedge that is close to 30' (it's above the roof of my two storey home). In the past we have trimmed it's width, but it has been suggested that we take off 6' from the top. I am concerned that this will have a negative impact on the health of the hedge and it's overall appearance. Any advice or experiences to share? Also, what about the best time of year to do this trimming? I live in Southern Ontario. Thanks.

Yes: you are liable to end up with a lingering bald and dead-looking area if you take that much off. Maintenance shearing is well-timed if undertaken late spring-early summer.
