I have a 3 year old false cyprus which I have for the first two winters taken great care to shield it from winter's drying winds. For the most part, little cyprus survived our Zone 4b/5 winters. However, last year we decided to provide more protection for winter using more burlap (boxed around the tree, but not tight). Between the outside burlap envelope and the tree we filled with leaves. I could not find any antidecicant to spray on the tree before winter but I did provide enough water. All our efforts were for not. The tree completely dried up over winter leaving the top 3/4 of it with dry needles. There are green branches on the bottom. A small broken branch reveals green also. It's not dead. Because it's ailing, I have not provided any fertilizer or other so-called "healthy sprays" Does anyone have an idea how we can revive my little cyprus? Any suggestions are most welcome. Thanks for any help out there. Nancyellen
Sounds like it may be time to give up on your cypress and try something that is hardy on your site. There is probably another kind of shrub you would like as well that will not require as much trouble to get through the winter there. And this time it didn't even get through the winter despite all the trouble. At best you will have to wait for the part that is still green to grow back up and replace the part that froze.
