The pictures show a small I trimmed today in Kent, England. I had remarkable 'bark' and I wonder what it is called?

After looking at it again, might be sweetgum. The opposite arrangement I saw might be where a long petiole crossed a stem.
Field Maple Acer campestre. Look closely, the leaves are opposite ;-) Bark like this is quite common (though not universal) on Field Maple.
