Does anyone know what kind of tree that is? The tree with red berries that grows like crazy in NY and makes a mess of everything?

Thanks but it is not a multiple berry fruit. It just has one berry and it is mostly pit. I don't remember anyone eating them but they were not poisonous. They grew all over NY.

I had a look on www and found this site with info on a tree count for New York. 592,130 trees were counted and id. By entering "more info" it brings up the most popular trees area by area.

    http://webserver01.nycparks.org/sub_your_park/trees_greenstreets/treescount/treecount_documents.php

However, none of the trees listed fit with your description of red berry.
Ginkgo biloba is a popular street tree in NY however, the fruits are more yellow than red. They also smell and can be very messy.

So back to saltcedars suggestion of a pic. Whole tree, leaf, fruit would have your mystery solved in no time.

    Easier with photos.

And its entertaining on occassion when the berry is really more of a purple, but someone calls it red.

Where do you see it? In the countryside and woodlands, or urban areas? Both?

So far it looks like the guesses could be as broad as Strawberry tree, Crabapple, Mountain Ash or Hawthorn.

Strawberry tree (Arbutus) would not survive in New York.
