Hello, I am new to this forum. I would like to know what the common way to measure a bonsai tree trunk is. Do you use a string and go around the tree? Do you just measure the width of the trunk? How far up from the ground do you measure? Thank you in advance for your attention. Carino

    Interesting query!

With normal full-size trees, the trunk diameter (or circumference, 'girth') is measured at "breast height", i.e., between 1.3m and 1.5m above ground depending on definitions; obviously, this would not work with bonsai. Sorry, no idea what the conventions are for bonsai, though.

well the diameter of trees is called "calliper". with bonsai you just measure straight across the trunk from one side to the other just above the "nebari" or root base. what are you sizing up i wonder?
