Looking to place a dead tree stump with intricate root system in our garden then to surround with plants, bark and rocks. I hope i am explaining this correctly. It's a tree stump that has been removed plus all its roots and dried out completely. Any recommendations on where to find these types of tree stumps?
You might try contacting a local logging company and see if they can help or have any ideas. Also, some times after high winds Doug fir and other types will have been blown over leaving roots exposed to the weather. Check out old logging roads etc. It's going to be a chore, but have fun! :)) barb
In Britain these are very popular. They are called Stumpery.Often used to plant ferns in and on. The companys that sell the roots advertise in garden magazines. You could try in your local magazines. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1297093 http://www.mygardenblogs.com/SFblog/?p=513 There are also several companies that sell driftwood for garden sculptures. http://www.driftwoodscotland.com/
Demolition & land clearing contractors. The local green waste or construction waste dump/recycling facility where these guys take their waste. I have been fortunate enough to live with a giant Bigleaf Maple stump for 25 years or so. It is still providing interest & screening. I recently persuaded my daughter to leave a 15 foot stump when she had to take down a Red Cedar. It looked a bit silly & naked. She took to calling it "frumpy-stumpy". I was concerned that she would remove it entirely, so I put 2 bird nesting boxes on it & drilled it full of holes (1/4" to 1/2") to encourage a variety of bees etc. We gave her a rambling rose which is now making it's way up from the base. She now approves. Stumps - Great things for adding to the interest of your property. Everyone should have one. gb.
Coastal areas probably have collectors. I'm almost certain that I met someone or saw a place selling stuff like that around Quinaulth, WA, last year. But my memory is not fresh about it. Maybe search Ebay too.
