These are all over the place in Dorval, Quebec. They had white flowers in the spring. The birds and squirrels are constantly on the branches devouring the fruit. The fruit is fairly soft. I was wondering if they could be chokecherries. I tried to get the habit in the first one. Sorry, I know it's against other shrubbery, I couldn’t find one standing alone.
Not chokecherry....Prunus virginiana. Note how they are in pendulous strands with many berries. chokecherry - Google Search But another Prunus sp....cherry. Note the fruits are in pairs. As children they would be picked and worn as earings. http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/baby-girl-cherry-earrings-wearing-40108505.jpg
Thank you. I'm not sure how many types there are, would these be sour cherries, the type you use for cherry pie?
They are all edible...but only way to tell if they are truly delicious is to try them. Over here the birds get them as soon as they are red and ripe....unless grown in poly tunnels.
Yes, it looks like Prunus cerasus, a Sour Cherry. The cherries are great for jam and pies, and for many other things. Very good for you, more nutritious than sweet cherries Cherry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Thank you for the name and the extra information. I did taste a few. Most were rather watery, but a few were tasty, sour but not puckery. I think the birds and critters got the best of the lot! There weren't many left. I'll have to try beat them to it next year.
