What are these trees in Montreal? Would they grow in Newfoundland? http://www.flickr.com/photos/humanoide/219609270/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/humanoide/219609426/in/photostream/
Second image looks like Gymnocladus dioica. Gleditsia was my first thought, however to leaflets seem too pointed for that genus.
Indeed one leaf on the second picture looks strange for Gleditchia. But the fruit and branches, they look inmistakable.
Thank you for such a prompt reply. Does this tree normally have thorns on its trunk? If so, would they have been cut off on these trees?
Seems like Gleditchia might have pibinately compound leaves: http://plantthis.com.au/plant-information.asp?gardener=15208&tabview=photos&plantSpot=
Thorns on trunks are moslt likely already dead, by cutting them you will not make any harm to a tree.
Now I've found the thornless cultivar Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis. It looks great and may grow in my zone.
