I have had a tree peony for about 15 years; once spectacular, it has not flourished in recent years. I just noticed that about half of the bark at the base is gone for about 6 inches up the trunk. Can any remedial action be taken or should I replace the plant? Bob
Hi Bob, I don't know that much about aging tree peonies, but if it has survived with the bark gone but isn't blooming, I don't think the bark is the problem. These plants prefer a more alkaline soil and the pH of the soil may have changed over time. The sun conditions may also have changed and that could be the problem of not enough sun. Do read here. You may need to do a pH test and add some lime. http://www.treepeony.com/treePeonyCare.html If that still doesn't help you might want to ask these folks. Do be sure to put in your state and hardiness zone when you register. It's most helpful. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/peony/ Newt
