Thank you. I've just looked at brachyandrum and madidum and the leaves are shorter than those of the Auckland tree. Also the trunk of these two species is stated as being colorful whereas the trunk of the Auckland tree has brown coarse bark...
Checked other Myrtaceae and found it - Agonis flexuosa. What clinched it was the nascent formation of distinctive (well, distinctive now that the match has been made) fruit. I had checked for fragrance of flowers but had failed to crush the leaves (which would have given a diagnostic peppermint fragrance).
