I am a complete plant/tree novice and need help identifying a tree given to us by a neighbor... So, here are the nitty-gritty's-- -We live in Germany and the tree is supposedly called an "Oelblatt baum". Translated directly, this means "oil leaf tree". -I was told it comes from Jerusalem -It should grow to be about 5m tall (according to our neighbor) -It is an evergreen -Its leaves are oval shaped (about 7cm long, 4cm wide), pointed at the end, very shiny and yellow in the middle turning to dark green towards the edges I have been desperately trying to find information on this tree-- how much water it needs, how big it will get, what it will look like in about a year (it is around 5ft-6ft tall right now), etc... I can include a photo of the tree if needed, it's just that I am a bit lazy at the moment and am hoping to get an ID based on the description alone. Let me know if a photo is needed :) Any information would be a tremendous help. Thanks in advance!
hi, in the bible, oelblatt refers to the olive tree, Olea europaea. But the leaves you describe are too big.....i think you will need to provide a photo or two. ciao BrianO
Ok, so I got off my you-know-what and I took some photos of our tree. I hope this helps. Thanks again for the input!
Looks like Elaeagnus pungens Maculata. See.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/283.shtml
Agree with young Luddite.....looks like Elaeagnus pungens (= Oelweide)...comes from Japan...so I do not know why your tree has an association with Jerusalem !? Ciao BrianO
Hi Brian, No idea on the Jerusalem tie either. Again, all the information we got was from our neighbor and I am now realizing that maybe he was misinformed as well. Anyways, after looking up information about the plant, I am finding it's more commonly a bush rather than a tree. Guess we will have to see how it all pans out. Keep your fingers crossed for us! Or, as they say here in Germany, druck die Daumen! Thanks again for all your help, everyone. All the best, Danielle
To maintain tree shape prune as needed. Mainly this will consist of removing sprouts that appear on the trunk.
