This tree is across the street from us but we enjoy it, particularly for the beautiful autumn show. The tree was severely assaulted years ago by a person wielding pruning tools (not my neighbour) but I love it anyway. The tree is now grown to about 20' x 20'. I would like to acquire one of these for a son but the variety is unknown. Can anyone help based on the pictures?

Perhaps it is helpful to see this photo of a leaf. This is late spring colour, new growth is lighter green.

    Hi.

Thanks for your suggestion but that doesn't narrow the ID down very much since there are hundreds of A.P. cultivars. I hope to find the specific one so we know what it will become in 10 or 20 years.

    Interact,

Are you sure it's a cultivar?

Unnamed seedlings are grown along with the numerous cultivars. Rather than making a probably hopeless attempt to place a cultivar name on this one buy him a similar variety that has the characteristics you want. If the purplish summer color doesn't matter then maybe the famous blazing fall color of 'Osakazuki' would make that a good choice.
